History of Golf

Golf in the World

There are definitions of the origins of golf, which lacks a clear starting point and is subject to many different opinions. Golf is believed to have originated in a region in eastern Scotland, part of the United Kingdom, near the Royal Capital, Edinburgh. Initially, players used a bent club to navigate sand dunes and hit pebbles on the path. In the 15th century, Scotland began preparing to defend itself against invasions. The country's enthusiastic pursuit of golf led many citizens to neglect their military training. As a result, King James II of Scotland banned the sport in 1457 (Golf History, 2023). However, people ignored the ban. In 1502, King James IV of Scotland became the first Golf King, earning the Royal Seal. With this royal approval, golf's popularity increased, spreading throughout 16th-century Europe. Later, the first golf club was established, the first tournament was played, and the first 18-hole course was built, spreading golf worldwide.

Golf in Türkiye

Golf in Turkey was first established in Istanbul in 1895, during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, with the founding of the first club, Constantinople (now known as Istanbul Golf Club). Over time, in the early 1990s, Klassis Golf Club and Kemer Golf Club were established in Istanbul. Golf clubs continued to be established. The construction of golf courses in the Belek region of Antalya, which is currently very popular, has rapidly increased the number of clubs. Following this, golf courses were established in Bodrum, Ankara, Samsun, Kuşadası, and İzmir.

The first golf course was built in the Maslak district of Istanbul. In 1977, it hosted the first recorded caddie competition in Turkish golf history, organized as an 18-hole game. (Federation, 2005)

The Turkish Golf Federation, which continues its activities to this day, was established on February 12, 1996, by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with decision number MDK/26. It later gained autonomous status on September 9, 2005. The first president of the Turkish Golf Federation was Raif Bilir. (History, 2023)
